Optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a key element of photonics technology in the optical telecommunication industry. An essential part in R&D of WDM technologies has focused on exploring devices based on optical Phased Arrays, or PHASARS.
PHASARs, also known as Arrayed-Waveguide Gratings (AWGs), are employed in optical (de)multiplexers and routers. The modeling of PHASARs feature a large number of geometric and material parameters, which are based on degrees of freedom in the design process. Since these parameters are crucial for device performance, an advanced simulation tool for WDM devices based on optical phased arrays can significantly speed up the design process, reduce the need for extra fabrication runs and lower costs.
