Full Service Cloud Compute

Optiwave has developed a Full-Service Cloud solution that allows users to run Optiwave design files on Amazon EC2 Instances effortlessly.

OptiFDTD 15.0+ users can now export FDTD designs to Linux files (.fdu) and simulate them using our new cloud simulation service. There is no need to sign up for an AWS account, example files will be provided, and full functionality & access will be given to all interested users. In the future, we plan also to integrate OptiSystem & OptiSPICE.

The Process:

  1. Create an Optiwave website account (https://optiwave.com/register/)
  2. In your Profile, navigate to Profile Options > Cloud Compute
  3. Add funds via Credit Card or from your promotional gift card
  4. Load your .fdu Linux simulation files (must be FDTD v15)
  5. Select your Amazon instance
  6. Start Simulation

Once the cloud computing process finishes, you will receive an email containing the download links to the results files & simulation videos.  And that’s it, you’re done!

Faster Simulations, For Everyone

Full-service cloud solutions make advanced photonics simulations possible for just about everyone.

  • If you’re a researcher working with limited computing resources, our cloud simulations empower you to expand the scope of your research.
  • Startups and established businesses can cut down on excessive energy usage and reduce the scope of local errors by relying on a remote provider.
  • Amazon’s established infrastructure and tested privacy protocols allow businesses to run important cloud compute processes without worrying about security.

Important Notes:

  • Our beta went LIVE on February 18th, 2019, including all core functionality.
  • Security is of the utmost importance:  Data is securely uploaded/downloaded via SSL endpoints using the HTTPS protocol. Server-Side Encryption (SSE) is then used to encrypt data stored at rest. Each object is encrypted with a unique key employing strong multi-factor encryption. As an additional safeguard, it encrypts the key itself with a master key that it regularly rotates. Amazon S3 server-side encryption uses one of the strongest block ciphers available, 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES-256), to encrypt your data.
  • The official Optiwave Cloud Compute 1.0 was released on April 1st, 2019.  All the fancy hooks & options have been available since the release.

Do I need to have a powerful computer to run optics simulations?

No. Our software has been designed to run on a variety of different systems and to utilize system resources efficiently. You can learn more about our system requirements here, or, use our cloud simulation solution to get around hardware limitations.

Are there any cloud licensing options for photonics software?

Optiwave offers a useful cloud licensing solution that can help users save time and eliminate the hassle of shipping charges. Optiwave users have the ability to download our software on their local systems and license them with our cloud service. You can learn more about cloud licensing here.

Are cloud compute solutions slower than local alternatives?

The speed of a cloud solution depends on many different factors, including:

  • Your internet speed.
  • Your distance to the computing servers (for low-latency tasks).
  • How the server manages resource allocation during high loads.

Generally speaking, reliable providers like AWS offer high-speed solutions with minimal downtime.
