Simulation of SMF using split step Fourier method

the time in the NLSE that exist in the help of SMF is not the physical time but it is (t-z/Vg) where Vg is the group velocity,and Z the propagation distance.
When i solve this equation using Split step fourier method like the help file,does we convert time samples to this values (t-z/Vg) or we are dealing with the physical time?
