  I have a problem to understand the role of the optical delay line in this design.

  Dear Maha,
  Typically, a delay element is needed when simulating a backward version of the forward signal in the setup. This delay guarantees that the signal is calculated in the forward direction and makes it available to the backward direction. Sometimes, you may need to increase the Signal Iterations in the main layout to allow that as well.
