Hello Optiwave.
I am working with Optisystem for my project. I want to know about Mach Zehnder Modulator and Mach-Zehnder interferometer and what is the basic difference between between using these two.
Also i want to ask about mach-zehnder modulators used in optisystem. Are they single drive and dual drive mach-Zehnder modulators?
Can you tell me which one is more advantageous and also can you give me some information on what and where should I use lithium Niobate Mach-Zehnder modulator.
Thanking you in advance.Regards

Hello Nagesh. Greetings.
As far as i know i have used mach-zehnder modulator as a modulator. About mach-zenhnder inferometer i dont any concrete idea. I would suggest you to go through the links i am posting. These will surely be of some help. With Regards

Can you actually tell me what is the application of interferometer in optical systems i mean generally.

Hi Nagesh,
One of the applications I came through recently is of Sagnac fiber interferometers which can be employed for sensing nonreciprocal and timevarying phenomena. So they become applicable tools for detection current, acoustic wave, strain and temperature.. Try the link below…

Surely it will be of help..

Hi Nagesh,
A Mach-Zehnder modulator is used to control the amplitude of an optical wave which is given to it.
The input waveguide is split up into two waveguide interferometer arms.
If a voltage is applied across one of the arms, a phase shift is induced for the wave passing through that arm.
When the two arms are recombined, the phase difference between the two waves is converted to an amplitude modulation.Where as in Mach–Zehnder interferometer two separate beam splitters to split and recombine the beams, and has two outputs,
which can e.g. be sent to photodetectors. The optical path lengths in both arms may be identical or may be different.
The distribution of optical powers between the two outputs depends on the precise difference in optical arm lengths and on the wavelength, the path length difference can be adjusted
so that for a particular optical frequency the total power goes into one of the outputs.
For misaligned beams, there will be some fringe patterns in both outputs,
and variations of the path length difference affect mainly the shapes of these interference patterns,
whereas the distribution of total powers on the outputs may not change very much. For more information please refer to :

As put forward by other members it is correct that Mach-Zehnder modulator is used to control the amplitude of an optical wave which is given to it while as the interferometer is used as beam splitters to split and recombine the beams, and has two outputs.
