Can anyone tell me what are the main disadvantages of uneven gain spectrum in EDFA amplifier for WDM system ? Why do we flat the gain spectrum in amplifier ?
Hi Anita, the main and most important advantage of uneven spectrum of EDFA is THE SAME amplification for all spectral channels of designed WDM system! It defines the localization of EDFA at the transmission path (WDM uses only one amplifier for all channels) as well as power management scheme.
Answering you 2nd question, it’s known that there are several peaks existing in the amplification spectrum of EDFA which are undesirable due to the reason indicated above. That’s why we are trying to equalize the gain spectrum in amplifier.
