Can anyone please explain what is the purpose of system margin ? Also how and where do we set it ?

System margin is used to ensure that small variation the system operating
parameters do not result in an unacceptable decrease in system performance.
. The loss occurs in the different components
connected in the system such as the connectors, splices, the optical fiber and also in
the system itself which is known as the system margin. Generally a system margin of about 6dB is
already set in practical systems.

It is used to calculate link budget, power budget and total loss.
