      What is power penalty? What cause Power penalty? how calculate power penalty?

      Dear San,

      for a given source of penalty/impairments (like SPM, FWM, Brillouin, dispersion…), the “Power Penalty” is defined as the amount of power in excess you have to launch/receive in order to obtain the same BER you would have without this impairment.

      For example: if without dispersion you have BER=1E-12 at received power = -20dBm, but when dispersion is present you need -18dBm to have BER=1E-12, the power penalty is 2dB (20-18).
