What is the difference between GPON, WDMPON, and TWDM PON?

Hello shahbaz
Basically Different pon standards are explained by ITU according to some parameters like DATA rate, which can supported by a PON system for 20/40Km and different no. of users. Here i have given links of some good research articles.I would recommend you to go through these papers carefully

Hi Shahbaz,
According to your question, I agree with Sam Sung that you can find the difference and distinguish these technologies looking at their recommendations series G.98x made by ITU-T. I am listing them here for your convenience: GPON – G.984.1; WDMPON – G.982; TWDM – G.989.2. In general, the main difference is channel multiplexing schemes and techniques (without the usage of any amplification in their transmission path). Let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi,
Thanks Sam and Ravil. I found these helpful but I still have confusion because TWDM is a combination of TDM PON (GPON & EPON) and WDM PON. There is another variation of WDM PON that uses passive splitters and AWG both which again makes it a combination of WDM PON and TDM PON. How basically we can actually differentiate between the two? What makes TWDM PON a Next Generation netwrok and different than the previous PONs? or TWDM PON is a new name given. I would appreciate help regarding this.
I am attaching a research paper that discusses the variations of WDM PON.

Hi Shahbaz,
First, I would like to clarify your statement about the “usage of passive optical splitters and AWG”. Passive power splitters are always used for TDM, and AWGs – for DWDM. The main difference between TDWM and DWDM is a channels multiplexing technique: time and wavelength for TWDM system on one side and just a wavelength (with dense spacing) for DWDM. TDM is based on Rec. G.707, G.7o3 of ITU-T. WDM is based on Rec. G.694 of ITU-T.

The exclusive information have been given by both Samsung and Ravil. all you need to understand is what WDM, TDM, DWDM and their combination mean. Then the sky is your limit.

check the link for simulatory comparison of PON standards. Hope it explains what exactly you need.

Hello Abhishek
Thank you for attaching the paper regarding good research article.Author beautifully gave the comparative analysis of the different PON standards. But difference between the GPON TWDM WDM PON has not been explained in this paper.Ravil gave the good explanation about the difference for GPON TWDM WDM PON.
