When I simulate a DWDM PON architecture by increasing length from 50 to 160 km with 10 km increments. I receive following values,
Min BER Penalty Extinction Ratio Max OSNR (dB)
      0 -7.00487 48.7404
      0 -7.00505 48.7404
      0 -7.0054 48.7404
      0 -7.00604 48.7404
      0 -7.00718 48.5072
      0 -7.00919 48.5072
      0 -7.01268 48.5072
      6.165E-272 -7.01866 48.5072
      3.896E-202 -7.02886 48.5072
      4.744E-131 -7.04616 48.5072
      1.505E-73 -7.07542 48.5072
      6.742E-37 -7.12495 48.5072

I want to link the results but I am unable to understand why there is a “-ve” sign with Penalty Extinction Ratio. And how do I relate BER, PER and OSNR values. As with increasing length PER and OSNR doesn’t change much while BER is increasing. Further there is a large Penalty Extinction Ratio value for smaller channel length and small Penalty Extinction Ratio for larger lengths. How do I interpret this? Please help

      Dear Muhammad,
Which visualizer(s) did you use to measure the Extinction ratio and OSNR?
Is it possible to email me your project as zip file to ahmad.atieh@optiwave.com? I’ll take a look and check the cause.
      Regards,
      Ahmad

      Sir,

Max. OSNR is recorded through WDM analyzer connected before photo detector. And Exrtinction Ratio (dB) is collected from Bit Error Rate Analyzer’s report sectio

      Sir,
You see that when length increases from 50 to 160 km Q factor falls from 45.8 to 12 and BER also increases to 6.7*10 E-37. But Extinction ratio and OSNR almost stays constant. There should also be a gradual degradation in OSNR as well with increasing distance and Bit Error Rate.
Further mentioned that eye amplitudes and Jitter are given in units of (a.u). One respected reviewer and even I am confused about this wording. What does it represent? I think jitter should be in pico seonds or nano seconds rather than a.u. Similarly eye height should be in volts or amperes rather than a.u. Please comment.

      Dear Dr Muhammad,
Unfortunately, I can’t comment on the results until I’ve access to the project and calculate it and figure out the issue.
Typically, we use a.u to allow using the instrument at different locations with units could be V/mV, etc… You can reflect on the units by calculating the levels from your system.
If you’d like to share your project, please email it as a zip file to ahmad.atieh@optiwave.com
