Unfortunately OptiSystem is a physical layer simulation package so we don’t have many tools available for higher layers. However, it is possible to start and design layouts in OptiSystem from Matlab. I would be interested if a user could simulate say the Data Link Layer in Matlab and call OptiSystem to perform the physical layer simulations.
You can think of it as a challenge!
