i got the nagative value of the panalty for eye opening,please explain it to me the significance of nagative value and a bit about the interpretation of the graph.

more losses are associated with transmission because the length has increased hand to compensate those losses , the requirement of the parameter (say power) increases linearly and then suddenly the requirement drops..i now think that nagative penalty(db) means that we should decrease power so as to reduce the effect of eye closure
i my self thinks now that penalty for eye opening can be both positive and nagativecase1:positive penalty: in this situation we require to compenate the losses of any parameter in design such as length.
case2:nagative penalty: there may be case where excess of power may create nonlinearities and other thermal noise at reciver end,
hence we should reduce the power, threfoe the penality is nagative.>>>>>>>>>>>>.

yeah aasif bashir dar,
i think it may be like that.
due to the xcess power density , there are nonlinear effects wjich degrades the system performance,
hence further increase in the poer will further degrade the system….thus in such case we have to reduce power from that of previous value…. hence value is nagative.

As pwer penalty is occure when a parameter in the system changes and results in degradation of the eye-opening, the amount of power that compensates for that degradation.

Hi,
As Eye Opening Penalty (EOP) is defined as twice the average signal level
divided by the smallest value of a one sample minus the largest value of a
zero sample. The EOP is not a power penalty. So it has nothing to do with
the fiber light loss budget. It shows the posibility of choosing a decision
threshold and should be less than 1 dB. So, if twice the average signal level
divided by the smallest value of a one sample is less than the largest value of a
zero sample, then eye-opening penality will be negative .
Eye Opening is related to pulse smearing. Pulse smearing is due to
optical dispersion of the fiber (among other things). -

It is already discussed by Alistu in one of the previous post that Eye opening is a characteristic that is used to evaluate system performance. Wider eye opening makes the system performance better by making decision making easier. And increase in power is a way to make system performance better and its effect can be seen in the eye diagram.
The increase in the power may cause system performance to degrade due to fiber non-linearities which come into play at higher powers.so the increase in power has a negative effect on the eye opening resulting in degradation of the eye opening which is known as power penalty as increase in power resulted in penalty or degradation of the eye opening.
So i think you got negative eye penalty because of this thing.
