This devices help improve the quality of a signal that has been degraded after some distance. For example, 3R regenerators reamplify, reshape and retime the signal that has been attenuated and distorted because of the undesired physical effects in the optical fiber. So the degraded signal is regenerated and can be launched into the fiber again for some distance and the transmission distance is increased.
